About ClearSchools
A free, independent guide to every state school in Gloucestershire. It brings published official figures together in one place and shows every school on the same basis. It does not recommend schools.
New to school data? Jargon buster explains every measure in plain English.
What it shows
- All 243 state primary, infant and junior schools and 41 state secondary schools in Gloucestershire. Independent schools are not included.
- Exam results, with a comparison against schools with a similar intake.
- How places were offered last year: the furthest distance offered, catchment notes and spare places.
- Attendance, suspensions, class sizes, special educational needs, staffing, spending per pupil and Ofsted inspections.
- Results over the last three years, sixth-form A level results, where pupils went after Year 11 and after sixth form, and how full each school is.
- The county's 13 special educational needs (SEN) schools, with the needs each is set up for.
- Key admissions dates, taken from Gloucestershire County Council's admissions pages.
You can browse without a postcode. If you add one, your full postcode stays in your browser. To measure exact distances, the page downloads the list of postcodes for your district (for example GL53) from this site, so at most the first half of your postcode is seen by our web host. Postcode locations come from the Office for National Statistics Postcode Directory, via postcodes.io.
How "results for intake" works
Schools with more pupils from lower-income families tend to get lower exam results, for many reasons outside a school's control. To help compare like with like, each school's results are set against what schools with a similar share of disadvantaged pupils achieve across England.
- Secondary: Attainment 8 is compared with a straight-line fit across 3,126 non-selective mainstream state schools in England with 30 or more pupils (SEN schools and 14 to 16 colleges are left out): expected Attainment 8 = 53.0 − 0.23 × the percentage of disadvantaged pupils. Grammar schools are not given this figure because their pupils are selected by test.
- Primary: the three-year share of Year 6 pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths is compared with a fit across 14,264 mainstream primaries in England with ten or more pupils in Year 6 (SEN schools are left out): expected percentage = 69.3 − 0.23 × the percentage of disadvantaged pupils.
It is a rough guide. It allows only for disadvantage, not for pupils' earlier results, special educational needs or other differences. The government's progress measures, which do allow for earlier results, are not published for these years. Small schools' figures move a lot from year to year, so primary schools with fewer than 15 pupils in Year 6 are marked and placed after other schools when sorting by results.
Comparisons and positions
Positions such as "3rd of 34" count schools in Gloucestershire with a published figure. In the secondary pages, non-selective schools are compared with each other and grammar schools with each other. “Typical” is the school in the middle of the county list (the median): half of schools are above it and half below. Where many schools share the same value, for example no permanent exclusions, they share the position.
When you compare secondary schools side by side, the shaded columns show the Gloucestershire, South West and England averages for all state mainstream secondary schools, including grammar schools. The GCSE headline averages (Attainment 8, English and maths grades) are the Department for Education's published figures. The other averages are worked out from the school-level figures and weighted by pupil numbers.
